With this Sunday’s National Old Stuff Day, we got to thinking about our closets’ longest-standing items. When it comes to closet staples, some pieces just don’t have expiration dates. So, we turned to stylist and designer Tina Tandon for the styles that are in it for the long haul.

Seasons and trends come and go, but there are few quintessential pieces in your closet that have major staying power. These are the must-keeps in your closet:

1. A LBD shift dress

A must-have in every closet, this wardrobe staple never goes out of style. You can dress it up or dress it down. Wear it with flats and a trendy scarf or denim jacket for a casual look, or with tights, a blazer, and low heels for a look perfect for any day at the office. Pair it with a statement necklace, or earrings and super sexy heels for a night out on the town or a dinner date.

Debra Messing, Stacy Keibler, and Diane Kruger, show different ways to wear this classic wardrobe staple. 2. A classic coat or jacket

That perfect go-to coat or jacket that goes with most of your outfits needs a permanent space in your closet. It could be a basic trench coat, a leather jacket, or a fur coat, whatever fits your style.  Simple cuts in neutral or your favorite color will serve you for a long time.

Alexa Chung, Katy Perry, and Jessica Alba show off their favorite classic coats and jackets. If you’re missing this staple, check out this must-have leather jacket from T.TANDON.

3. A basic blazer

Similarly, you can never go wrong with a nicely fitted blazer. Nothing spruces up an outfit like a good blazer! You can throw it on with a pair of jeans and t-shirt, a LBD, pants and a button-down shirt, or just a skirt and a top – the options are endless.

Jennifer Aniston, Carine Roitfeld, and Stella McCartney show different ways to wear this staple. Still hunting for that perfect blazer? Try a classic look from Rag & Bone.

4. A pair of blue jeans

A great fitting pair of blue denim won’t be going out of style anytime soon – that’s for sure! A fit that flatters your figure and is comfortable is a must in your closet and deserves to be there for many years to come. You can dress it up with high heels, a nice blouse and a blazer for an evening out, or dress it down with a t-shirt, sweater, sweatshirt or a button down shirt, and flats or sneakers. Add accessories like hats, scarves, and jewelry to change things up a bit.

5. A white, button-down shirt

Nothing is fresher than a crisp, white button-down. It can be sexy, cool, dressy or powerful all in one, depending on how you wear it and what you pair it with. Wear it with dress pants and a fitted blazer with low-heels for a simple office look, with jeans, a scarf, hat and boots for weekend chic, and accessorize it with a statement necklace, leather leggings, and high heels for a sexy night out.

Check out Salma Hayek, Alexa Chung, and Charlize Theron’s take on this classic.

6. A great t-shirt

Another wardrobe fixture that everyone already has in their closet, is a simple, favorite tee. There are endless uses to it. It’s the go-to for your gym class, running errands, a walk in the park or a trip to the grocery store. Wear it with jeans or leggings under a blazer or sweater, or dress it up with dangling chains or a scarf to create various looks.

Get inspired by Taylor Swift, Fergie, and Hilary Duff for some ways you can rock your favorite tee.

7. A statement necklace

This one has major staying rights in your closet, especially, if it’s a designer or an heirloom piece. It’s always going to be stylish, and will become an heirloom of your own, coveted by your little sister or daughter one day. If a particular design goes out of style, it will come back around or become a vintage, highly desired piece one day.

8. Timeless, black pumps

Always versatile, always in style, always elegant – a classic, black pump will never be obsolete. Wear it with casual or dressy looks, as it can add an extra oomph to your style, and a bounce in your step. It’ll boost your confidence every time!

Pro-fashionistas Heidi Klum, Lucy Liu, and Victoria Beckham show how timeless this style really is.

9. A chic hat

You might not be going to the Kentucky Derby every year, and have a need for a statement hat, but a classic floppy, wide-brimmed, or fedora will always be your all-weather best friend. A great accessory for your travels, it will not only give protection from the scorching sun or bone-chilling cold, but also offer a touch of glam. You can wear it on the beach, on a safari in Africa, your excursions on a vacation, or simply with a pair of jeans and t-shirts running around the city.

Look to Charlize Theron, Beyonce, and Elizabeth Olsen for some major hat inspiration!

10. Effortless scarves

Well if it’s an Hermes, there’s no question that it’s an heirloom piece to be handed down. But, a chunky wool or cashmere scarf will be your best friend in winter for many years to come, and a cool cotton or silk one will always add a great layering option for summer.

Take it from Heidi Klum, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Selena Gomez – scarves are the perfect topper to any look.
