“Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and, of course, each other.” Betsey Johnson (1)
Today in 2007, Betsey Johnson announced she would bring her inimitable New York style to the UK and personally open her new boutique on London’s Floral Street. The expansion into the UK was followed by an unfortunate financial event, the 2008 recession. The recession affected many businesses, but Betsey tried to fight through it.
In 2012, Betsey Johnson LLC, filed for bankruptcy. She was forced to close all 63 of her stores including her flagship store in SoHo. She also had to let go of 350 employees. However, instead of giving up, she was focused on reinventing her brand.
Now under the parent brand of Steve Madden, Betsey created a new line of affordable products. The look of her new line is still the same old Betsey Johnson. Her signature look of rainbow tutus and other over-the-top styles have inspired other designers such as Heatherette and Jeremy Scott.
